What's a good typing speed?
A rough guide to where your WPM sits. Accuracy matters too: aim for 95% or higher.
- Keep your fingers on the home row: A S D F and J K L ;
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard.
- Go for accuracy first. Speed follows.
- Practise 10 minutes a day rather than an hour once a week.

Every 5 characters, including spaces, count as one word. Your WPM counts only correctly typed words, divided by the minutes taken. Raw speed counts everything you typed, mistakes included.
Accuracy is the share of keys you pressed correctly. Mistakes still count against accuracy even after you fix them with backspace.
Most people type around 35–40 WPM. 40–60 WPM is good for office work, and above 70 WPM is fast. Many typing exams and data-entry jobs ask for around 30–40 WPM, so check the exact rules for yours.
